Miss
Universe 2004 Walkthrough
The following is my account of the Miss Universe pageant (unedited for
immediate posting onto this site). All entries were typed during the
pageant itself “as I saw it”, some other details were filled in during
the commercial breaks. The final question transcription was done after
the show. A full review will be available tomorrow.
Opening video was good showcasing not only the delegates but various
spots in Ecuador. They really have all sorts of regions, from snow
capped mountains to rain forests. Upon seeing the moving pictures I
found so much more delegates beautiful. Bahamas, Cayman Islands
(stunning), Trinidad & Tobago and Turkey (had softer features). I
wouldn’t be surprised to see one of them in the pageant. Puerto Rico
was also hot she might get through.
Opening number was a bit dry. Stage was large but not so spectacular.
Hosts were great as usual. Billy Bush looked so small beside Daisy
Fuentes but both did a good job opening the program. The judges were
introduced next. Paula Abdul wasn't there. Bill Rancic winner of the
Apprentice replaces Kwame Jackson. Then a video
on Amelia Vega’s year as Miss Universe, she really made up for all the
criticism about her last year and had a blast of a reign. She is such
a natural on camera and will do well in the future career.
Okay Top 15. They are called in this order. Puerto Rico yes just as I
had thought, she looks great; Norway, as expected; Trinidad & Tobago,
I should have placed her much higher she looks so much better on
video, Ecuador, no doubts about that; India, wow amazing must have
done well in her interview; Australia, very beautiful; Angola, I tell
myself here is the surprise entry we were all expecting; Jamaica,
looks very nervous did not smile much but still gorgeous; Colombia, as
predicted; Switzerland, nice; Costa Rica, I knew that voice in my head
was right I had always liked her; Chile, oops oh no I still have a lot
of predictions who have not been called; USA, my favorite, yes;
Paraguay, another favorite oh no, just one more and still no Venezuela
and
Ukraine; last is...Mexico, what?
Wow what a shocker. This year’s results are amazing. Must have been a
lot of twists in the interview. Where is Ukraine? And Venezuela this is
the first time in decades? Anyway because of that this year I did
badly getting only 10 out of the 15. Good thing I made some changes
this morning or it would have been worse.
Gloria Estefan’s first number. They had an audio problem I did not
hear any of the vocals.
After the Evening Gown Competition: I had USA, Paraguay, Jamaica on
the top of my list followed closely by Trinidad and Tobago and Norway.
Norway did better, just as I had suggested on this site she changed her
hair and her gown turning out better than in the prelims. At the other
end of that Colombia changed the hair and gown combo we all loved
in the prelims because of that she might not get any further. USA changed her gown, I
think this is her night she might win this whole thing. Trinidad
however looked very stunning from what I saw she is a also a contender
for the title. I think sure to go home are Colombia, Mexico, Angola,
Chile.
Top 10: Costa Rica, Trinidad and Tobago, USA, Puerto Rico, Jamaica,
Paraguay, Ecuador, Australia, India, Colombia – wow tonight is the
night for Latina beauties. Another shocker Norway did not make the
cut, neither did Switzerland.
Around the world get to know the Top 10.
Swimsuits: For me Trinidad and Tobago leads the swimsuit competition,
she among everybody else seemed to be on tonight! Also on top were
Paraguay and USA. I think USA could have looked better though a bit
disappointing.
Other comments, I think Australia bounced her shoulders too much
during her walk, Ecuador has big thighs. She should not get into the
Top 5 but might get in for political reasons. Jamaica seemed a bit too
nervous.

Photo: My top 4 in swimsuit;
USA, Puerto Rico, Paraguay & Trinidad & Tobago
My Top 5 are: Trinidad, USA, Paraguay, Jamaica, Puerto Rico
Special Awards are up next. National Costume as we know goes to
Panama. Miss Congeniality goes to Miss Italy. Miss Photogenic, is
Puerto Rico as expected for the nth time in a row (4th I think).
Support by Puerto Rican fans is really amazing.
The real top five: In this order Paraguay, USA, Puerto Rico,
Australia, Trinidad and Tobago. Pretty good selection. I think Jamaica
would have made it if she exuded more confidence. Wow!
The Final Question: As was last year, the girls themselves wrote the
final questions. (This transcription is 90% accurate. repeated
words are taken out)
Paraguay: Picks her own question. Then picks one from Trinidad & Tobago:
If you could interview any
female leader in history who would you interview and why? Answer: I
would interview Eva Peron because she continually struggled for the
freedom of her country. I believe that we have deep in our hearts our
own countries and that is what I struggle for. And here I am in the Miss
Universe pageant as a finalist.
USA: Question from Puerto Rico: What do you think has been women’s
greatest contribution to today’s world and why?
Answer: By far
children. We wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the caregiver, the
home maker, the person who takes care of the home and who makes it
what it is. Yes men are great and we need men, but what would you be
without women?
Puerto Rico: Question from Paraguay: Give us three words that would
describe you and why. Answer: Perseverant, Sincere, Sympathetic. I
always work hard for what I want and I think that is what we should do
and that is what I am here at Miss Universe for. Even though I had many
obstacles I went for my dream and here I am making my dream come true.
Australia: Question from Amelia Vega. If you could choose what
time period to be born and what sex to be what would you choose and
why? Answer: I’d have to say this time period because we have as much freedom
as we want. And I chose the sex of female because females have a lot
of say in today’s society. I’d say this society. Today!
Trinidad & Tobago: Question from USA. We tend to learn our biggest
lessons from our failures. What is one failures in your life that you
learned from about? Answer: Trust Shandi to give me a hard question. One
failure I learned most from in my life would definitely be when I hit
my head on stage in my first fashion show because here I am now I
learned to walk and overcome it in front of a big audience and what an
audience we have tonight.
Last Look:
Paraguay. Beautiful. Very nervous. One of my favorites did great but
lacked the “go get it” quality tonight. 2nd runner up
USA: Amazing smile. She’s my Miss Universe!
Puerto Rico: Lovely. She has come so far. My prediction 3rd runner up.
Australia: Very pretty but does not shine so bright tonight. 4th
runner up?
Trinidad and Tobago: Really stunning and has an endearing quality. If
Shandi does not win it tonight she’ll be the one. 1st runner up
Thanks to everyone who helped. Amelia Vega takes her final walk. We
did not see her wearing her crown tonight. She looks confident yet
humbled. “Gorgeous," says Billy Bush.
The final announcement:
Fourth runner up: Trinidad & Tobago
Third Runner up: Paraguay
Second Runner up: Puerto Rico
Ladies walk to the center. Tense moment.
First Runner up: USA
Miss Universe is Miss Australia!
Wow what a night. It ends in a big surprise. Billy Bush
calls her "the
thunder from down under”. A bit disappointing I really wanted USA
to win this so badly especially with some of the other favorites out
of the running and I don’t
think Australia is as beautiful next to this real life Barbie doll.
But then looking back at the answers both gave, even though the
questions differed in difficulty USA kind of strayed while
Australia stayed on track. Australia did not looked surprised. She was
very calm throughout her first walk as the new Miss Universe.
In the end the Miss Universe pageant shows us that there are always
surprises and this year’s pageant, one of the most competitive in
history came out to a wonderful end. It’s been a fantastic ride!
Cheers!
