CLOSE SHOTS FOR THE TOP 15 - Having covered the pageant via the
web since 1999 I can truly say that this has been one of the toughest
competitions I have seen to date. With several stunners vying for the
crown it will take more than just beauty, body and brains to even
place in the Top15. To get into this elite circle each delegate needs
to have something to set her apart from the rest.
If you have been here the last two days then you'll notice some
changes. After much thought while sleeping last night I decided to
change the order a bit. Taking out some from my 15 and bringing in
some from the 16-20 list. Main reason for change was that I wanted to
go for my gut.
16.)
PERU: Compared to last year's delegate I can truly say that Liesel
Holler by far deserves to be in the top 15. I get the feeling that
Peru has started to develop their girls a little bit more intensely.
Liesel was stunning during the pre-pageant swimsuit competition but
was just modest in evening gown. However because of Ecuador's presence
she had do get kicked down to 16. If she gets into the top 15 though she will
need to tone it down a bit and opt for a more natural (less make up)
look.
17.)
BRAZIL: Brazilians have always been criticized for being old
fashioned and too pageantry. I think Fabiane Nicolotti may have been a
victim of that during last week’s preliminary long gown competition.
She also isn’t as fit as the others on this list so don’t expect her
to do good during the swimsuit competition. I initially had her in my
top 15 but after much thought I don't think she can make it after all.
18.)
JAPAN: After last year's dynamite performance everyone seems to be
keeping an eye on Japan. Personally I don't think Eri Machimoto is as
stunning as Miyako was last year. During the prelims I had expected
another daring gown presentation but it did not happen. Eri is said to
have misunderstood directions and wore the wrong dress. Her height
could play to her disadvantage but she is well poised and confident.
If she gets in this year it will definitely put Japan on the “pageant
world” map.
19.)
ARUBA: I think Zizi Lee put up a good fight at this year’s
competition being consistent all throughout. Though she is a very
beautiful girl I don’t think her overall performance can match the
stunners in the top 10. Like I said, with the tight competition this
year the delegates really need something extra to place higher. Still
there is a possibility that Zizi’s consistency could pay off and we
might just see this former Miss World 1st runner up in the semis.
20.)
TURKEY: One of the most exotic beauties this year, Fatos Segmen
stands out with her distinctly sharp features and curly hair. She
caught my attention way in the beginning but was always in the “watch
out for” category. I told myself I'd wait for the preliminaries where
she turned out to be one of the favorites. Still her performance did
not convince me enough to merit a place on my Top15.
WILD CARDS - This is the first time that both Vietnam and Ethiopia
will be competing at Miss Universe. Coincidentally both of them made
it to my wildcard list.
VIETNAM:
At 5”11, 19 year old Hoang Ngoc is stunning on the stage. With long
legs and a fancy catwalk this girl was actually one of my favorites
leading up to the pre-pageant. My initial impression however that she
was working it too much (obvious in earlier photos) turned out to be
true as exemplified in her evening gown presentation. If the judges
overlook this than I have a big feeling that first timer's luck will
work for this girl at it almost always does.
ETHIOPIA:
I kind of feel bad that I don't have a black woman on my list this
year. It's not that I don't know how to appreciate them; the facts
just are no one was really a standout beauty for me. If ever though
someone gets in, I am kinda hoping it would be Farehyiwot Abebe. I
think she did quite well during all phases of the preliminary
competition. She also has first time luck on her side.
