Making Sense of the Senseless...continued
Pessimism inside of me would call that place utopia, as elusive as
ever, but somehow why can’t we as a people work towards a semblance of
that. We have been badly injured by the past; let us not injure
ourselves anymore.
When President Arroyo took office early in January she admitted the
ravage of the last few months of the Estrada administration had
brought upon us. She called on the nation for a time of healing;
nevertheless we stand here 6 months later still injured. Militant
groups are dissatisfied with her performance, claiming that she has
not met their demands; the opposition wants their hero free and
doesn’t seem to care about what is said as so long as it is pointed
against the government. Down south the Abu Sayyaf are wrecking havoc,
wasting lives, destroying a reputation, and costing us money. All of
them oblivious of all the help this administration needs.
It saddens me to come upon the realization that we have pretty much
evolved into Rizal’s analogy of crabs in a bucket. It saddens me to
see that it is more than just islands that divide us. It saddens me
that I can do nothing about it, and that I have been tempted to just
run away from it all and find a better life somewhere else.
I have not made up my mind as to what I plan to do about all this, but
as I write this piece today I pray that God opens the eyes of the
nation; that we may see beyond the fog of delusion that has for so
long blocked our way. I pray that Filipinos will one day wake up to
the realization that regardless of what we believe in, or what we
stand for, if we do not work as one country, life will not be better
for anyone, it never will be.
Politics has never been clean, perhaps our government today is as
dirty as always has been, but it is the government that stands today
and it should be stood by and respected. With all the mess going on in
the background this new government hasn’t had the chance to settle
down and really think about the options to undertake in order to move
forward. Let’s give it a chance.
Despite their size, ants can do a better job than those nasty (but
tasty) crabs. In working together they can build structures out of the
ground. In working together they have thrived throughout the years. In
working together they can take on tasks which impossible to beings of
their kind; likewise only in working together can we succeed.
