Book Recommendation:
The Art & Science of Web Design
Any book that finds
itself highlighted and scribbled on after reading is worth the
purchase. Any book that stimulates creative thinking and provides a
wealth of ideas afterwards is worth double of its original value.
Reading through the Art and Science of Web Design by Jeffrey Veen was
one of those journeys for me. I was forced to re-read several portions
because I had started of reading the first few chapters in the car
during stop lights. In doing so I realized that I had missed out on
several concepts and that reading it required my full concentration.
Before purchasing the book I had read through various reviews that
claimed the book’s title was misleading and that it was merely an
introduction to web design. I still bought the title and after reading
it beg to disagree. Veen’s book just like that of a science book
explains and illustrates the basic concepts of web design as a
process. In order to understand what it is and how it works it starts
from the beginning, the very foundation of the web.
This book it is neither a reference manual nor a style guide, instead
it focuses mainly on how presentation structure and behavior must
interplay with code, words and pictures for a well working and
effective site. One of the most important points stressed is that
“without a fundamental understanding of how these aspects of a web
product interact, there is no hope for success.”
For those who take interest in web design and want to take that step
further into this new world, this book is a good choice. It equips you
with knowledge that is oftentimes forgotten yet is most vital for
building sites that work. Just like in the Sciences, a better
understanding of the basic concepts is essential for understanding
more complex ideas and theories.
